Moments of intense emotion can be overwhelming.
Chemicals coursing through our bodies create rushes of fluids –
blood, love, tears. How can one convey the floating feelings of
dizziness created by such intense experiences?
The vivid pigments in paint and the fluidity of the medium
approach a pure expression of these moments.
Through the process of painting, the alchemical manipulation of
pigment and oil becomes a direct extension of the fleeting ephemeral
nature of the thoughts fueling my passion and connecting everyone in the
canon of the human experience.
I use abstraction to enter subconscious planes of emotion and
emerge with an intimate visual record of my journey.
Large canvases reinforce not only the intensity of the
experience, but more significantly they relate directly to the size of
the human body and aid in bringing about a conversation between the
work, the viewers, and me.
Highly saturated glassy forms reflect sensations of fluidity and explode
outward while muted areas and rougher brushwork recede, giving way to
strong sensations of visual push and pull.
Coupled with my experience in glass blowing, the forms echo the
intense heat and viscous nature of glass.
Molten glass is a material that is difficult to control and its
heat is overpowering; this is directly related to the feelings expressed
in the paintings. Like
blowing glass, my painting involves experimentation, intuition, and a
degree of playfulness. I
allow the materiality of the medium to help dictate formal decisions -
reflecting the uncontrollable nature of powerful feelings.
Ultimately, these techniques offer a dynamic view of occasions
when emotion erupts from the mind, and given the chance, pours out upon
the canvas manifesting itself in a manner which communicates most
directly to you and the world. Back to statements |
